“Necessity is the mother of invention” – author unknown

Movie award season is in full-swing with the upcoming Oscars in a few short weeks. In the northern hemisphere spring and summer is approaching. With it, better weather and longer days. We’re not quite there yet – but we just could not hold back on sharing this project by Dave Banks. Dave wanted to enjoy movies with his family in the great outdoors – but the “out-of-the-box” solutions available for purchase were very expensive.

The idea for Dave’s solution is pretty simple. Using PVC tubing (1.5″ in diameter) as a frame he suspended a 5′ x 9′ screen of canvas and used three buckets filled with cement to anchor the screen. Apparently “blackout cloth” made a perfect screen material. That really was all that was required – besides a projector, speakers and DVD player. Do note that a projector with a very high light (lumens) was recommended by the author. Screen_1

The article is excellent because it gives instructions on how to make your own screen and even itemized a list (with pricing) for what it will cost to make one of these.  Get this, the total cost was $122.75!

While we haven’t done it ourselves, this seems to be a fun project for anyone who wants to enjoy one extra activity outdoors this summer. If you enjoy movies and the outdoors – why not give it a shot and start planning ahead?
